Holiday Flavors - Apple Pie Protein Smoothie

A close second to the Pumpkin Pie smoothie in our office is the Apple Pie smoothie - blend this up and share it with you family and friends, it will be the hit of the party!

At a "pick-your-own" apple orchard in Medina, TX.
Apple Pie Smoothie
1 cup milk or almond milk
1 scoop vanilla Chike protein powder (or other vanilla whey protein powder
1/2 gala apple, cut into cubes
1 tbsp maple syrup
Allspice, to taste

Directions
Place all ingredients in a Nutri-bullet or blender and blend to desired consistency.

Protein Smoothie Tips
You can add ice to any blended shake to make a protein smoothie "on rocks" or blend ice into the smoothie to make a "frappe". Fruit can sweeten your shake naturally plus adds fiber and vitamins for extra nutritional benefit. For a thicker shake, reduce the amount of milk or milk substite. For a higher protein shake, double up on the protein powder or add a 1/4 cup of nuts or nut butter.

Happy holidays and feel free to share your holiday protein shake recipes with us!

Enjoying the Holiday Flavors!

Just because you are eating healthy doesn't mean you have to miss out on the flavors of the holidays! My personal favorite is pumpkin - but instead of the pumpkin pies, ice creams, and sugary drinks - I choose to make pumpkin with a healthy twist! Try these wonderful recipes for the holiday:

Red Curry Pumpkin Soup
Pumpkin Protein Shake
1 scoop vanilla Chike protein powder (or other vanilla whey protein powder)
8 oz plain almond milk
1/2 cup canned 100% pumpkin
1/2 banana
1 tsp pumpkin pie spice

Blend in a nutri-bullet or blender and enjoy!
For a frosty beverage, blend with ice.

Red Curry Pumpkin Soup
1 onion
1 Tbsp coconut oil
1 Tbsp red curry paste (or curry spices)
2-4 cups broth
2 cans (13 oz each) 100% pumpkin
1 can coconut milk
Juice of 1 lime
Cilantro and/or green onion, for garnish

Saute onion with coconut oil for 5 minutes in a large soup pot. Add red curry paste and a splash of broth, stir until well combined. Add the remaining broth, pumpkin, coconut milk, and lime juice to the pot. Blend using an immersion blender (or in batches in a blender, caution if liquid is hot). Heat to desired temperature and enjoy sprinkled with cilantro leaves and chopped green onion. Add sauteed shrimp or chopped cooked chicken for a protein boost or pair with a high protein food choice atop a simple salad for a complete meal.

Enjoy and Happy Holidays from your team at CHRISTUS/UT Weight Loss!
